The story takes place during the summer of 1960 in the fictional
town of Castle Rock .Maine . A boy named Ray Brower is being
missed. He was hit by a train. In the town, it is wildly speculated what could have happened to the boy. In the first major scene
the four boys are all in a tree house where the character Vern tells the other
three boys about the missing body. As Verne ,a member of a little gang, tells
his friends that he knows where the body is, Gordie and
his three friends, Chris , Teddy , and Vern set out to look for it. The boys are all convinced
that going to look for the body and possibly finding it would make them all
heroes and that everyone would want to know them. Thus the boys decide to go
forth and try to find the body .“A great whispering noise began to rise in the
woods on either side of the tracks, as if the forest had just noticed we were
there and was commenting on it.”- the body
. Throughout the story each of the four boys deal with the
conflict of person vs. self. They all look deep into their lives and think what
they are doing both in life and in going to find a kid in their age that was
hit by a train while picking blueberries. Later on, in life, Gordy looks back
and thinks that friends he had when he was eleven were the best friends that he
ever had and misses the old days." Feeling it, trying to understand the suns that shone on it, the rains
that fell on it, and the snows that covered it. And to wonder where I was when
each thing happened to it in its lonely place, where I was, what I was doing,
who I was loving, how I was getting along, where I was. I’d hold it, read it,
feel it... and look at my own face in whatever reflection might be left.”
